British woman sentenced for drugs
ST JAMES, Jamaica — A British woman who was charged with several drug-related offences was sentenced when she appeared in the St James Parish Court on Monday, yesterday.
Convicted is Alaha Robotham of a Birmingham, England address. She was arrested at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James on Wednesday, February 15, by detectives from the Narcotics Division.
According to the police, Robotham attempted to board a flight to Frankfurt, Germany with ganja and cocaine valued at just under J$3 million. The drug was concealed in canned products inside her suitcase.
The sentence is broken down as follows:
Possession of cocaine — J$850,000 or six months in prison; attempting to export cocaine — J$ 1 million or six months; possession of ganja — J$ 15,000 or 6 months; attempting to export ganja — J$492,300 or six months in prison.
The sentences for each offence will run concurrently.
Robotham will, however, serve two years each mandatory imprisonment for the cocaine and ganja charges.
