UK Diaspora to adopt 55 clinics for ‘Jamaica 55’
INGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) — Jamaica’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK), Seth George Ramocan, is calling on the UK Diaspora to contribute to its Jamaica 55 Adopt a Clinic campaign.
Ramocan, who was speaking to JIS News at the Jamaica 55 Diaspora Conference at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston yesterday, said 55 clinics are being targeted under the initiative.
The UK High Commission launched the campaign earlier this year in support of the Government’s drive to strengthen primary health care services.
He noted that more than 100 clinics have been identified as being in need for rehabilitation and upgrading.
As such, he said the Minister of Health, Dr Christopher Tufton, reached out to the Diaspora to garner their support by adopting clinics.
“Adopt a Clinic is a great idea as it seeks to improve the standard of service offered by the clinics. The UK Diaspora decided to take it on as a legacy project,” he noted.
The High Commissioner indicated that there is a website (adoptaclinicjamaica.co.uk) where people can go to indicate their support for the campaign.
He said that the funds have been coming in, with “nine clinics adopted and commitments that will take us to 50 per cent of the target of 55.”
