Yesterday was Kingston’s hottest day in 24 years
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Kingston on Thursday recorded its hottest day in 24 years.
The Meteorological Service of Jamaica said the maximum temperature recorded at the Norman Manley International Airport was 36.9 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature ever recorded since 1993.
Montego Bay also had a hot day but the maximum temperature recorded at Sangster International Airport was a milder 34.9°C. The highest temperature ever recorded in Montego Bay was 35.8°C in June 2012.
The Met Service said the spike in temperature is quite natural in summer months.
“Daily maximum temperatures across Kingston are forecast to average 35.0-36.0°C for today and tomorrow. In Montego Bay, maximum temperatures should average 34.0-35.0°C, also for today and tomorrow,” the organisation said in a statement.
The MetService at the beginning of summer forecasted that local temperatures from June to August 2017 would be warmer than normal and added the Climate Predictability Tool (CPT) predicted a 50 per cent chance of temperatures being above-normal and a 30 per cent probability of normal temperatures being experienced across the island in the summer period.
They had also advised residents to take the relevant steps to maintain their body’s hydration with regular intake of water, particularly if involved in strenuous outdoor activities.
