KFC New Kingston employees hail Bolt
Anticipation of Usain Bolt winning his final individual 100m race on the world stage was high across Jamaica, including inside the KFC restaurant in New Kingston.
However, before the race yesterday, some fans had the inkling that the legend would not have it all his way.
“I want Bolt to win, but it is not a cakewalk,” said Canute Parkes, who also called himself ‘Whiteman’ told the Jamaica Observer. “I think so against the background of [Christian] Coleman’s performance.”
As it turned out, Coleman of the USA took silver behind his countryman Justin Gatlin, while Bolt took bronze.
The shock of Bolt’s defeat reverberated all across Jamaica. The crowd inside the KFC outlet fell into stunned silence as the sprinters flashed across the finish line in a bunch.
“I am disappointed, I think he should have run the 200 metre as his final race,” said one employee who gave his name only as Allen.
However, the KFC employee went on to express what most Jamaicans felt yesterday. “Thanks for the years of representing Jamaica, Mr Bolt.”
“Bolt is still a winner for me,” said another KFC employee who identified himself as Thompson.
Nerese Anderson felt that despite being beaten in his final race Bolt “Did the country proud and I thank him”.
