Game time!

FLOW Super Cup first round kicks off in MoBay tomorrow

CATHERINE HALL, St James — The centre of the Jamaican schoolboy football universe will be at the Montego Bay Sport Complex on Friday and Saturday when the first round of matches in the lucrative FLOW Super Cup competition begins.

Four teams from the rural area Ben Francis knockout and four from the Corporate Area Walker Cup will play in two double-headers to decide the semi-finalists who will play at Sabina Park the following weekend.

On Friday, Clarendon College meet Calabar High in the first game starting at 3:00 pm, followed by St Andrew Technical taking on St Elizabeth Technical starting at 5:00 pm.

The following day former champions and newly crowned Walker Cup champions Jamaica College play Dinthill Technical in the 5:00 pm opening game, while Kingston College and Rusea’s High School meet in the 7:00 pm game.

In its fourth staging, the organisers of the competition changed the format from the daCosta Cup and Manning Cup to the knockout competitions, and Carlo Redwood, FLOW vice-president of marketing, predicted that this edition could be the best.

“This could be the greatest Super Cup tournament ever; the Champions League of schoolboy football continues to impress in both support and execution,” Redwood said at last week’s draw for the first round in Kingston.

Of the eight teams taking part in the competition, Rusea’s High, who are qualifying for the competition for a second-straight year, will be the only representative from western Jamaica, and it is anticipated that they will have a big support come Saturday evening.

Rusea’s and Kingston College will be seeking to bounce back from tough losses as Rusea’s High were knocked out of the Ben Francis KO at the semi-final stage by Dinthill Technical last weekend, while Kingston College surrendered their Walker Cup title to Jamaica College on Tuesday.

Rusea’s had a week to prepare and rest, while Kingston College will have to dig deep twice in four days if they are to secure one of the knockout titles this year.

Both schools are also in their respective “league” semi-finals. Rusea’s High will play STETHS in the daCosta Cup semi-finals next week, while Kingston College will play the winner of the St Andrew Technical vs St George’s College play-off game in their semi-final.
