Williams tops scoring chart in overseas domestic tourney
For Jamaicans plying their trade in overseas domestic football competitions, Romario Williams reigns as the topscorer for the calendar year.
The 23-year-old Williams netted 16 goals on-loan to Charleston Battery in the United Soccer League (USL), the second-tier division in the United States.
The Reggae Boy, who won the Battery’s 2017 Offensive Player of the Year Award, currently plays for US Major League Soccer (MLS) Atlanta United.
A forward, Williams’S exploits for the USL team included a hat-trick against Rochester Rhinos on April 15, and braces against Ottawa Fury, Louisville City, and Toronto II on April 30, June 4, and June 25, respectively.
One of 32 Jamaicans who played in the USL in 2017, Williams edged out compatriot and fellow USL player Jason Johnson, who scored 13 goals for Phoenix Rising.

Darren Mattocks booted in only four goals for Portland Timbers in the MLS, one more than Leon Bailey of Bayer Leverkusen in Germany’s Bundesliga, Andre Clennon of VPS in Finland, and Giles Barnes of Orlando City in the MLS.
On the international stage for club and country, Lionel Messi leads with 51 goals, ahead of Robert Lewandowski 47 goals, Edinson Cavani, Harry Kane, and Cristiano Ronaldo 42 goals.
