A Good Sport

The career of retired sports administrator Dr Michael Fennell — who served as president of the Jamaica Olympic Association for 45 years — was recognised last Friday evening at the Spanish Court Hotel, The Worthington.

Organised by members of his alma mater Calabar High School and its old boys’ association, the accountant-turned-sporting stalwart was toasted for having “earned his own patch of immortality”, surrounded by family, friends and fellow Rabalac Lions — dating back to the honoree’s graduating class of 1953 — as well as the boys’ school’s millenial crop serving as the evening’s ushers.

With Fennell’s one-time classmate and long-time friend, former Jamaican Prime Minister PJ Patterson being furnished the duty of guest speaker at the dinner reception, the octogenarian Fennell and politico Patterson traded friendly jabs at each other’s turn at the podium. Paying our own respects to the sporting giant, Monday Social paints our salute in shades of green and black.
