PNP urges swift investigation into Miami gun bust
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) is calling for a swift investigation by both local and US law enforcement officials into the over 100 illegal firearms seized in a shipment destined for Jamaica at the Miami International Airport in Florida last month.
In a release last night, the PNP said it is aware of what it said is uncorroborated information circulating on social media linking an individual in the gun find to Michael Troupe, PNP councillor for the Granville Division of the St James Parish Council.
The party said it understands that the person named as consignee is a former employee of Troupe. It said it has been in touch with Troupe, who has indicated that the person who is now the focus of the investigation left his employment some three months ago.
The party said although the reports have nothing to do with the PNP, it is nevertheless urging a swift investigation by both the local and US law enforcement agencies to determine the veracity and culpability of individuals in this extremely serious matter.
The guns and more than 200 assorted rounds of ammunition were discovered by US Customs and Border Protection (CBT) and Outbound Enforcement Team (OET) at the US airport on November 13.
The Jamaica Observer learnt that the guns were destined for Montego Bay, St James, the parish that has recorded more than 300 murders so far this year.
