Simply The Best (of 2017)

Part 3

CLASS OF 2018August 27, 2017

They are who’s hot and who’s next. SO opened its yearbook of the trendsetters, the tastemakers, the hard workers, and the dreamers who are anything but ordinary. They are bold, brash and bright, and making moves worth keeping tabs on.

WHATTA TING @ AFROPUNK BROOKLYNSeptember 3, 2017

No Sexism, No Racism, No Ableism, No Ageism, No Homophobia, No Fatphobia, No Transphobia, and No Hatefulness.” The Brooklyn edition of the Afropunk Festival, which celebrates black heritage and music and of which Rock son Matthew Morgan is a co-organiser, was back for a 12th staging of soul, power and black-inclusive politics. With billed live performances from a potpourri of genre acts. R&B crooner Raphael Saadiq, Hollywood royalty Willow Smith, Jamaica’s own reggae star Protoje and jazz man Gary Clark complemented Afropunk’s expected spades of patrons marching to their own gender-neutral fashion beats through the lens of shutterbug Kenyon Hemans.

DESIGN WEEK JA 2017September 24, 2017

A year after enjoying Design Week London with Rock promotor par excellence Theresa Roberts, we have offically launched our very own #DesignWeekJA2017. Never ones to be daunted by the fact that we do not have a design district — SO thought, no need to be, really, when we have so many talented hands. Many thanks to our partner Victoria Mutual Building Society and to Appliance Traders Limited and Business Access TV.

THE 3D SPECIALOctober 8, 2017

His larger-than-life persona and creative mastery loomed large on The Rock’s entertainment landscape, and his untimely passing in September cast a long shadow not only for his inner sanctum but also a storied list of music and fashion insiders, corporate executives and ardent admirers who extend far beyond the island’s shores. SO dedicated an issue to our beloved style arbiter because, even as we mourned, there was much to give thanks for.

PORTLAND RISINGOctober 22, 2017

There’s definitely something about Savannah Baker’s Portland-lensed portraits. Arresting and infinitely compelling in their subject matter, Baker has a true artist’s eye and through her lens has developed an uncanny knack of finding raw beauty in the denizens of the eastern parish which she feels privileged to call her third home (she has residences in her native England and in Los Angeles). T hrough the click of her camera, Baker’s maturing aesthetic, which varies between naturalistic and a stylised ‘rootsy glam’, utilised the town of Port Antonio, the seaside haunts, district folk, raggamuffin rude boys, and coloured-tressed hotties, finding unfiltered truth in the images she captured and SO shared.

SUZANNE & MICHELLE ROUSSEAU PRESENT…November 5, 2017

Sisters Michelle and Suzanne Rousseau returned to the annual Jamaica Food & Drink Festival roster to co-host Brunch at the Gallery, the $20,000- finale of the Caribbean’s #1 urban food festival. Culturally inspired, the Rousseaus outdid themselves in coding and retracing the origins of the non-gourmet Jamaican palate and transported brunchers through a culinary prologue of The Rock’s world-famous street- and homestyle fare.

The result: a leisurely curated meal of this heritage cuisine — dynamic in its deconstructed earthiness and genteel in its reconstruction — giving a nod to the past yet representing the latest juncture in a shared career that, having spanned 20 years.

CAMPARI SHOW UP, SHOW OFFNovember 19, 2017

After nearly six weeks of criss-crossing the island in search of the most stylish female and male, with check-ins in Kingston, May Pen and Montego Bay, the inaugural staging of the Campari Pop Style series reached a fashionable climax on Saturday, November 11, under the starry skies at the waterfront in downtown Kingston.

Music and acting are familiarbedfellows for the fast-rising starSevana.
