Part 2

MUM’s THE WORDMay 14, 2017

HOW TO IDENTIFY AN UPTOWN BOY/GIRLJuly 2, 2017

“An Uptown (UPT) Boy is a rare specimen of Jamaica male most frequently spotted at his other, other woman’s house. He is known for his good last name and bad attitude.

His natural habitat is after-work drinks and he is known for his migration patterns to “country” on the weekend.

He is exclusively seen in pack formations with other UPT Boys. He is often accompanied by a series of gadgets yachts and other expensive accesories. He survives on a diet of rum and mama’s boy pampering. Grooming is extremely important to this species. Monogamy seems to be favoured. SO brings you the latest reporting on how to spot this unusual breed of male in the wild.”

“What’s in a name, or acronym for that matter? Lots it would appear…

Being an Uptown (UPT) Girl is more than being from a certain zip code; it’s an all-consuming career path. From birth, all UPT Girls are enrolled in the “catch a man” PhD programme with a double major in “good-good” body and a minor in protecting the family name. Excellence is a must! As i sbeing well-bred, trained and disciplined regarding how to be perceived as the perfectly behaved daughter, the smiling trophy girlfriend and the ageless wife.”

Clutch those pearls! Savannah Baker added Roxx to her Pum Pum edition of designs. You might have recalled those ever-so-cute-looking socks that found favour with Rihanna and Madonna, among others. Well, the enterprising daughter of famed hotelier Jon Baker along with her business partner Gemma Shane from Bermuda collaborated with artisan-cum-jeweller Errol ‘Ninja Star’ Winston, created Pum Pum Roxx — one-of-a-kind handmade pieces crafted from recycled and upcycled pieces.

‘WEAR’ IT ALL WENTAugust 20, 2017

On the heels of a scintillating performance at Reggae Sumfest, resident dancehall vixen Spice was given the ultimate sartorial compliment by the global fashion industry’s bible, Vogue , which fawned over the So Mi Like It singer’s bold, bawdy mode of dress, raving that her Sumfest stage persona was “[a] perfect example of the artist’s fearless, ever-changing wardrobe — one that is redefining dancehall style”.

SO found delirious delight in Vogue scribe Deidre Dyer’s acknowledgement of Spice’s fashion-forward sensibilities but harkened back to the the dancehall genre’s flashy factor, so vividly embodied by preceding counterparts of the 1980s and 1990s.
