Abandoned packages a challenge for ShipMe
Courier company ShipMe has slashed in half the time allotted to store goods for customers from the previous 60-day window.
In an email to customers titled “We need your immediate assistance”, the courier service provider indicated that it is very close to maxing out its local storage capacity, and needs customers’ help in picking up packages.
ShipMe, like other courier companies, saw an increase in package volumes from customer shopping online for Christmas gifts. Many consumers have also taken advantage of massive Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals to ensure that gifts arrive in time for Christmas.
But on December 7, ShipMe advised that it needed to manage large volume of packages that it was receiving on a weekly basis, while adding that the uncollected packages were preventing customers’ new packages from being made ready for pick-up owing to lack of space.
“If you have packages that are Ready for Pick-up, please make an effort to pick up those packages urgently, today if possible! Your assistance in making space in the warehouse would be greatly appreciated,” the email read.
The courier company said interim measures have been put in place effective December 9th to make space for new packages arriving at their local warehouse facility.
“All packages that have been Ready for Pick-up for more than two (2) weeks will be removed from local storage and placed into short-term storage until at earliest the 1st February, 2018,” ShipMe said.
The company went on to warn customers of its intention to dispose of any and all mail that may be ready for pick-up on its account for more than 30 days.
“If you have any mail that is still present on your account after the 15th December 2017, it will be disposed of without further notice. This measure is being carried out to make space for incoming packages and mail,” ShipMe said in its December 7th email.
“NOTE: If your package has been Ready for Pick-up before the 31st of August 2017, please be advised that those packages are no longer available. Thank you for your understanding, and all the best for the holiday season,” it added.
An online shopping, package and mail forwarding service launched in December 2011, ShipMe has rapidly expanded its customer base from both businesses and individuals.
As business grew, the company expanded its space, but storage space has remained a major issue. ShipMe had its first yard sale ffor unclaimed customer goods back in 2014. At that time, the company offered customers a 60-day window to collect abandoned packages.
Over the year, ShipMe has encouraged customers to use the shipping cost calculator on its website to better plan for collection of their goods on arrival, as additional charges maybe become eligible.
