Vasciannie hands out cash awards to UTech high achievers
The University of Technology (UTech), Jamaica, in further recognition of academic excellence of its three outstanding graduates who earned the President’s Pin at the graduation ceremony held last November 4, on Wednesday, December 20 presented the high achievers with the accompanying cash awards of $25,000 each.
The cheques were presented by Professor Stephen Vasciannie, UTech president, at a special presentation held at the Papine Campus.
The President’s Honour Roll award and President’s Pin are awarded each year to graduates who have attained the criteria of a grade ‘A’ and GPA of 3.75 to 4.00 in the last academic year. In addition, students must be in general good standing with the university.
Professor Vasciannie made presentations to Rhona Wong-Reid, who graduated from the School of Public Health and Health Technology with the Bachelor of Science in Public Health Nursing and a GPA of 3.83, and Chanelle Pearson, graduate of the School of Computing and Information Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Computing who earned the Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Sciences with a GPA of 3:75. Wong-Reid is currently employed as a public health nurse at the Kingston and St Andrew Health Department, and Pearson is employed as a junior software developer with Shipping Association of Jamaica (Advantum).
The third President’s Pin recipient, Shervain Barrett who was awarded the Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science with a GPA 3.76, was unable to attend the event.
In commending the high-achieving graduates on their excellent academic performance, Professor Vasciannie said that, “I was feeling very proud of you at graduation and I continue to feel very proud of your achievements,” adding that “I know that this was achieved with long hours of working through the night and with diligence throughout your time at the university.” University Registrar Mercedes Deane further commended the President’s Pin awardees and urged them to be “good ambassadors for UTech, Jamaica by telling others of your success at the university”.
