Wolmer’s, Ardenne inaugural Old Boys Masters Cricket League bowls off today
Wolmer’s Old Boys’ Association and Ardenne Old Boys will be combining their efforts to stage the inaugural Old Boys Masters Cricket League, scheduled to begin today at the former’s Heroes’ Circle base.
Wolmer’s Old Boys will square off against their Ardenne counterparts in two Twenty20 fixtures. The feature contest is set to bowl off at 2:00 pm, following the curtain-raiser which is set for 10:00 am.
After staging a friendly contest between their respective alma mater’s current teams last year, both associations decided to merge their efforts to stage this masters league, in a bid to raise funds for their respective cricket programmes.
“Seeing that this is the inaugural staging of this tournament, we had to determine how we, as a group, would be able to raise funds to benefit the cricket programmes. After deliberation, we came to the consensus that we would ask for donations from the players as well as other old boys,” said Elvoy Bennett, chief organiser of the tournament and member of the Wolmer’s Old Boys committee.
“Also, on the day, we will have refreshments on sale to aid in the fund-raising and hopefully with a successful inaugural tournament, we’ll be able to procure sponsorship for future stagings to cover the costs that we will be faced with,” he added.
In order to achieve their goals, Bennett pointed out that they have created social media portals on Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat along with their our own interactive website to provide daily updates and a countdown to today’s event.
“We also have done a promotional video for the match through engaging our peers who support the initiative. We are exploring the avenue of using the radio as a means of raising awareness for our initiative, as in years to come we want to expand the scope of the competition and would sincerely appreciate the mentioning of our league on air,” Bennett ended.
