A property owes water bill regardless of who ran up the debt — NWC
The National Water Commission (NWC) is reminding customers that, by law, and distinct from other utility debts, water supply bills are tied to the land and remain due and payable regardless of who may have used the water and caused the debt to be incurred, or when it was incurred.
Landowners are therefore being reminded by the NWC to “exercise due care in seeing to the payment of water bills charged against their property, even if the property is occupied by others, as ultimate responsibility rests with the property and does not have a time limit”.
According to the NWC customers should be aware of the fact as it intensifies its debt collection in the new year.
The NWC, in a statement yesterday, said that in the coming months it aims to increase revenue collection through a range of stepped-up activities, including incentives and rewards for on time payment; special welcome back initiatives; more convenient payment options; increased bill payment reminders; quicker and more effective bill delivery; more efficient metering; more aggressive prosecution of delinquents and other court action against persons and properties owing sums to the commission.
