Brazilian women arrested following shootout with police in Guyana
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — Guyana police say they have detained four people, including two Brazilian women following a shootout in Lethem in the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo region on Tuesday night.
“Acting on information, ranks went to a house at Tabatinga, Lethem about 10:30 pm and on arrival were forced to take cover as several rounds were fired at them from inside of the building,” the Guyana Police Force said in a statement.
They said they recovered one .38 revolver, one 9mm magazine and forty-two live rounds of ammunition in the house and arrested four people.
Police said they had also arrested three Brazilian men who robbed a business place in the commercial district of Lethem at gunpoint on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, two Cuban nationals have been jailed for nine months after they admitted forging Canadian permanent resident cards.
Tahimi Batista, 28, and 29-year-old José Rodrigues, were arrested at the Cheddi Jagan Airport as they were attempting to use the false document in an effort to fly to Canada.
The Cubans told the court that they bought the cards online and paid US$2,000 each. They claimed that they did not know the cards were false but admitted that they were not issued by any Canadian immigration authority.
