Paulton Gordon elected new JABA president
Paulton Gordon was elected as the new president of the Jamaica Basketball Association (JABA) at its annual general meeting held at the Jamaica Olympic Association office on Sunday.
Gordon, who held the post as second vice-president in the previous administration, succeeded acting interim president Calvin Martin, who took over the helm after former president, Dr Mark Bloomfield, resigned the post last year.
Gordon defeated Major Clifton Lumsden, the current president of the Business House Basketball Association with 14 votes to 11.
Twenty-five members were registered to cast their votes at the meeting comprising affiliates of JABA. These are Southern Basket Conference, Western Basketball Conference, Northern Basketball Conference, Central basketball Conference, and Eastern Basketball Conference.
Also casting votes were the Business House Basketball Association, Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association, and the Inter-Collegiate Sports Association.
It was the second time Gordon was contesting for the presidency of JABA. However, he was voted in as third vice-president before the second vice-president resigned and he was then moved up to second vice-president.
Meanwhile, Major Lumsden, a former first vice-president, was failing for the fourth time to become president. However, he congratulated Gordon on his victory.
There were several new members elected on the executive committee of JABA, while treasurer Kevin Alexander was the only member re-elected to his post.
Former president Marland Nattie has been elected third vice-president.
The newly appointed executive committee members elected for the first time were Galton Taylor from Western Conference as first vice-president, Trudy-Anne Riley, Pauline Richards unopposed as general secretary, and Jason Moses as assistant treasurer.
There was no nomination for the post of assistant general secretary as the only nominee had declined, along with the selection of council members. These positions are to be filled by the JABA council at a special meeting to be held at a later date.
