Portmore’s Maalique Foster on two-week trial with New York Red Bulls
Portmore United FC attacker Maalique Foster departed the island on Monday for a two-week trial with Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise, New York Red Bulls.
Foster has been one of the players with influence within the Portmore United team and recently took his quality on the tour of Turkey with the senior Reggae Boyz team, and previously at the MLS combine in Miami.
Known for his blistering pace and trickery, the attacking player is looking to impress the New York Red Bulls organisation with his on-field attributes.
The opportunity is one that could possibly kick the door open for his budding career, and Foster is hoping to make the most of it.
“This is an opportunity I have worked hard over the past two years to get. I believe in my abilities and the hard work that the Portmore United coaching staff has had in my development coming through the youth teams to the senior team, so I am hoping to achieve something from this opportunity,” the fleet-footed player noted.
By virtue of this opportunity, Foster will be absent for crucial Red Stripe Premier League games against defending champions Arnett Gardens FC and former champions Montego Bay United, but he is confident of the quality within the Portmore United team to get the job done.
“Portmore United is not about one person, it’s a whole family. Even though I would love to have been involved in those two games, I believe in my teammates and I know they will be able to get the job done,” stated Foster.
Head coach Shavar Thomas echoed similar sentiments.
“Maalique is that type of player every team would love to have. He takes care of himself and has a great attitude towards training. I, along with the Portmore United family, wish him all the best on this opportunity and I believe we will be hearing good things as we did from the Combine (MLS Combine),” the former Reggae Boyz defender shared.
Foster will return to the island on Monday, March 19.
