Marie Forbes smashes Class 2 discus record
Vere Technical’s Marie Forbes smashed the six-year-old girls’ Class Two discus throw record to retain her title won last year on yesterday’s fourth and penultimate day of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Championships at the National Stadium.
Forbes, who had taken the silver in the shot put two days earlier, had a best throw of 46.69m to beat the old record of 46.64m set in 2012 by Gleneve Grange, then of Holmwood Technical.
Forbes lived up to pre-Champs expectations as she came into the event as the red-hot favourite with a string of solid performances and had already gone over the 47.00m mark earlier in the season.
Rusea’s High’s Aliesha Shaw won her second medal, taking the silver with 40.96m and Excelsior’s Kimberly Lugg took the bronze with 40.13m.
Cedricka Williams of Holmwood Technical won the Class Three discus throw with a best mark of 41.21m, well ahead of Excelsior’s Raphae Guthrie with 36.57m, and Manchester High’s Fabrienne Foster took the bronze with 34.15m.
Holmwood Technical’s Tamara Thompson improved on her eighth place last year to win the javelin open, throwing 39.04m to beat discus Class One champion Gabrielle Bailey of St Jago with 38.54m with Petersfield High’s Judeen Aird taking the bronze with 38.15m.
Class Two shot put record holder Danielle Sloley of Immaculate Conception High was fourth with 36.12m after placing 11th last year.
Ardenne High’s Torian Cave won the Class Four high jump, clearing 1.58m with three athletes tied on 1.55m behind her.
Excelsior High’s Teddyann Arthurs took the silver medal and Hydel High’s Alliah Baker, the favourite, got the bronze on count back ahead of her teammate Shackayla Henry.
Holmwood Technical’s Keneva Headley improved on her bronze from last year to take the gold in the girls’ open triple jump with 13.12m (0.3m/s), with the Edwin Allen pair of Akelia Smith with 12.94m (0.0m/s) and Lotavia Brown with 12.90m (0.7m/s) taking the silver and bronze, respectively.
Interestingly, Brown also jumped 12.90m last year while placing fifth.
Excelsior High’s Shantae Foreman, who improved on her high jump record on Wednesday, will seek to improve her third-place performance in the long jump today as she goes into the finals with the best mark from yesterday’s preliminaries.
Foreman had a wind-aided 6.00m (4.2m/s) with Mt Alvernia High’s Paula-Marie Brown next, also with a wind-aided 5.47m (2.3m/s), and Paula-Ann Chambers of Edwin Allen and Immaculate Conception’s Shanta McFarlin both next with 5.44m (1.1m.s) with St Jago High’s Kay-lagay Clarke and St Andrew High’s Davia Nichol, both on 5.42m.
