Cocktails With — Nadia Roxburgh

Nadia Roxburgh juggles many hats! The multiple award-winning lighting designer is the technical manager at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, production planner, educator, and Kiwanian of the Year (2016/2017) for the Kiwanis Club of New Kingston. She’s your everyday Superwoman. But what happens when the cape comes off?

Over drinks at the Spanish Court Hotel’s luxe Cabana the “Tech Diva” sheds light on her accomplishments in the industry, philanthropy, guiding philosophies and even how she plans to “spread light, one smile at a time.” Have a read.

What is your favourite sip?

Wray and Nephew White Rum and water. But mostly I fake it and drink club soda on the rocks.

Who/what inspires you and why?

A lot of people inspire me. Mostly, people who decide to push beyond the boundaries placed on them. The “dream doers” – those who live their dreams.

My design life is inspired by the chief architect and lighting designer: God.

Natural light is my greatest inspiration.

What do you do for fun?

My second office is the beach.

Who/what sparked your interest in philanthropy?

My parents. I grew up in a home where we were taught to always help others in any way we can.

What is your guiding philosophy?

#pahsitivitee — There’s always something to be happy about!

Explain the concept behind “spreading light, one smile at a time”.

I believe we can make a difference in someone’s day by just using a smile or a kind word to bless them.

Soca or Broadway?

I can’t choose!… A musical about the development of soca!

Which lighting from a Broadway production do you favour most?

I loved The Lion King for all the mood and colour, but Evita in its simplicity has to be one of my favourite lighting designs.

Which of your own lighting would you like to see on Broadway?

The work I did on Ships Log: Daaance Coconut Daaance for L’Acadco: A United Caribbean Dance Force.

To date, which award or accomplishment has been most significant?

Kiwanian of the Year 2016/2017 for my club The Kiwanis Club of New Kingston.

9:00 am or 9:00 pm?

9:00 am? I don’t experience this much, so I can’t speak to it.

Which bit of technology can you not do without, and why?

I could live in a tree.

What are your Top 5 pet peeves?

Cats!!!

Tardiness

People’s feet touching me

Healthy food

Hip-hop music at soca parties

If you could go back to any stage of your life and fix any one thing, what would it be?

I wouldn’t change any stage of my life. Every bump and bruise has helped to shape the person I am. I continue to enjoy the journey.

Where would your dream home be, and why?

I would really love to live in a hotel like Alan in Boston Legal… Actually, a beach house… with indoor plumbing!
