Owner/breeder David Willers passes on
Sadly, The Supreme Racing Guide is reporting that long-standing owner and breeder David Willers died on Wednesday. He was 68.
Willers had his greatest moment in horse racing in 2002 when his dark bay filly Simply Magic by Royal Minister – Fontainbleu became the first filly to win the Triple Crown series of races at Caymanas Park, where racing started in 1959. The Triple Crown comprises of the 1000 Guineas, the Jamaica Derby and the Jamaica St Leger.
Simply Magic did even more than win the Triple Crown in 2002, as she also won another Classic race, the Jamaica Oaks, which is not a part of the Triple Crown series of races. Willers was the owner and breeder of Simply Magic, who was trained by Philip Feanny and ridden by Winston Griffiths.
Willers’ last major taste of breeding success came on Saturday last (April 14, 2018) when Disability Charm took home the 1000 Guineas for owner Fisherman Stables, trainer Patrick Lynch and jockey Robert Halledeen. Disability Charm ( Soul Warrior – Runnin On Empty) was bred by Willers.
