Satellite phones to assist Tourism Ministry in disaster preparedness

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Tourism is slated to hand over six satellite phones to destination assurance managers in furtherance of its disaster preparedness initiatives tomorrow.

The ministry, in a release today, said that since 2006 it has been working in collaboration with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) to mainstream disaster risk management within the tourism sector through its Multi-hazard and Contingency Planning Programme.

The handover of satellite phones which is set to take place at the ministry’s offices at 64 Knutsford Boulevard, is part of an overall system which the ministry said is intended to improve the interface and dialogue between the ministry and its agencies, the tourism emergency operations centres, the national emergency operations centre, the tourism resort areas, and the wider tourism partners and stakeholders.

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett is set to conduct the handover at 9:00 am.
