Mavado shot at in Cassava Piece

Mavado was shot at in his home community of Cassava Piece, St Andrew, on Saturday.

He was not hurt in the incident.

According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s information arm, the Corporate Communications Unit, he and an individual had an argument around 11:30 on Saturday. The person left the scene and returned with a group of men, one of whom fired at the entertainer who escaped.

The matter was reported to the Constant Spring Police Station. An individual is being held in connection with the shooting.

Mavado (given name David Brooks) was raised in Cassava Piece, a gritty area which inspired “Gully God”, another of his monikers. He got his break in 2004 with Real McKoy when he was part of Bounty Killer’s Alliance.

The deejay is no stranger to controversy. He was arrested and charged with shooting with intent and illegal possession of firearm in relation to an event occurring in July 2007, but was freed of the charges.

In May 2012, he was convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious destruction of property after a driving incident, and was fined a total of $100,000. An appeal against the sentence was unsuccessful.

A press conference convened by Deputy Superintendent of Police Mark Shields ended his bitter rivalry with Vybz Kartel in 2007.

Mavado is known for songs including Weh Dem A Do, So Special and Hope and Pray.
