Three men charged in $48-m drug bust
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Narcotics Police have charged three men who were detained on Sunday in relation to the seizure of approximately 1,200 pounds of ganja valuing over $48 million at Parotee, St Elizabeth.
Charged are 34-year-old Neville Brooks, 27-year-old Malcolm Foster and 38-year-old Omar Brown, all farmers of Slipe district in the parish. They are charged jointly with the offences of Possession of Ganja, Dealing in Ganja, Taking Steps Preparatory to Export Ganja, Use of Conveyance and Conspiracy.
Reports are that on Sunday, June 10 about 9:30 pm, the police were conducting operations in the area when they saw a group of men off-loading several knitted bags from a Toyota Hiace bus. Upon seeing the police the men ran but were subsequently accosted.
The bus was searched and 24 knitted bags containing 121 packages of compressed ganja weighing approximately 1,200 pounds were seized, the police report. The Hiace bus, a Honda CRV motorcar and a Toyota Altis motorcar were also seized.
The men were interviewed in the presence of their attorneys on Wednesday, June 13 where formal charges were brought against them.
All three men are scheduled to appear before the St Elizabeth Parish Court on Monday, June 18.
