Jamaica among several countries elected to serve on economic and social UN council
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica was among several countries elected on Wednesday to serve on the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) for the term 2019-2021.
Brazil and Paraguay were the other two countries elected in the Latin American and Caribbean regional grouping
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a release yesterday, stated that Jamaica will play a more active role in advancing and strengthening the work of the Council and will collaborate with other States to fulfil its mandate in areas such as: sustainable social and economic development, climate change, disaster risk reduction, and environmental protection.
“I am truly delighted by this new opportunity for Jamaica to contribute to the multilateral efforts to treat with important issues that impact not only the attainment of the National Development Plan 2030 Agenda, but also the globally agreed Sustainable Development Goals,” said Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith.
”The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the six organs of the United Nations and is primarily responsible for advancing the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental,” she said.
