Sergeant Rose-Marie Lee is balancing careers in crime fighting and gospel music. The law enforcer showcased her soprano range at the June 13 Jamaica Fun in The Son concert, at National Heroes Park in Kingston.

She performed her current single, Spiritual Warfare, written and produced by Gifton Smith, which uses sound bites from crime scene reports. Released earlier this year, this is her first recording.

Lee has been singing since childhood but also wanted to be a police officer. For her, balance is the best of both worlds.

“My job doesn’t stop me from doing what I love, so I enjoy what I do,” she told the Jamaica Observer. “I wanted to be a police; to be honest with you, I’ve always loved the uniform. People were always saying, ‘you’re tall it would fit you; you look like a police’. So that’s one of the main reasons why I ventured in that area.”

This year marks 20 years Lee has been in the Jamaica Constabulary Force. She is based at Stony Hill Police Station in St Andrew and contrary to what people may think, her career choices complement each other.

“Most times people look at the negative when it comes on to the police, so for a police to come out declaring the word of God it makes a world of a difference,” she said.

But not everyone supports her musical endeavours.

“Some members of the force do not understand that it is also a part of the community relations effort. It’s not about carrying the big guns, no. People tend to gravitate to my type of thing more than when a police comes in the area and a bad situation happens. It’s more memorable, trust me on that,” Lee explained.”

Sergeant Lee is from St Ann, where she was raised by her mother and grandmother. She attended the Philadelphia All-Age School before moving to Kingston where she attended George Headley Primary School.

Lee furthered her education at Ocho Rios High School and University College of the Caribbean.
