Soné serving his Purpose
Jamaican-born, US-based gospel/reggae artiste Soné is thrilled that his latest single, Purpose, is gaining traction.
“It’s a great feeling that the song is finally getting out there and I am getting positive feedback,” he said.
A licensed minister, he currently serves as a youth director at New Life Fellowship Centre, pastored by Bishop Ruddock in Sunrise in Florida.
“My ministry’s statement is to impart the good news of Jesus; he was crucified for all, which makes him saviour of all. Heal the sick, raise the dead and reinforce the truth of the new man. I am bringing that same mission to my music,” he said.
Born on September 3, 1985 in the parish of Clarendon, Soné (given name Cecil Wilson) grew up surrounded by the constant presence of dancehall and reggae music. His family operated a sound system called Turbo Sonic. He represented Clarendon College in football. He then migrated to the US after completing high school.
He is working on his first studio album which will be released shortly. He officially launched Purpose Label for which he is the chief executive officer.
“I believe that every life has a purpose, and mine is to teach the gospel and wins souls through music,” he said.
Soné wants to lead the charge of reggae gospel artistes who are being sidelined by the rise of singers who espouse the traditional ‘praise-and-worship’ brand of music that presently dominates the local gospel scene.
“I would say that the reggae gospel artistes are not producing the quality content that the singers are; therefore, the singers are the headliners. But I think that will change. I feel like I have been chosen the lead the charge… and help bring back to prominence of the beloved reggae gospel artiste,” he said.
