Stakes record run by Mr Universe to win BGLC trophy
Mr Universe, in another super-sprinting display, captured the Open Allowance Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC) Trophy feature in a new Stakes record on the Emancipation Day race card at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Mr Universe ( Region Of Merit – Raging Fury), who allowed weight all round, stopped the clock for the five-and-a-half furlong (1,100m) event in 1:05:0, erasing the previous mark of 1:05:3 jointly held by Uppa Tune in 2013 and Dreamcometrue in the 2016. The track record of 1:03.1 was set by Michele’s Magic in 1997.
Owned by Carlton Watson, Mr Universe was put through by his rider Gary Richards to take up the lead as Wong Don (Javaniel Patterson) and Secret Traveller (Aaron Chatire) chased him around the half mile (800m).
Coming into the lane unmolested, Mr Universe just went on his merry way to win by five-and-a-half lengths. The Wayne DaCosta trainee won ahead of Another Bullet (Dick Cardenas) and Orpheus (Linton Steadman).
It was Richards’ second winner on the 10-race programme as he earlier won aboard Machu Picchu in the second race, providing a rare win for trainer Terrence McWhinney.
Also with two winners on the day were trainers Steven Todd and Paul Charlton and jockey Aaron Chatire. Todd’s winners were Chief Prospect (Devon A Thomas) and Diferentgeneration (Oneil Scott), while Charlton won with Bindaredundat (Aaron Chatrie) and Flowers Thirty (Jerome Innis). Chatrie’s other winner was Miss In Kiss in the third race.
Racing continues on Saturday with 10 races set for competition.
