THE iconic Vernamfield will host its final drag meet on Sunday as the National Drag Racing Circuit (NDRC) stages One Last Vernam, One Last Time.

“NDRC is very happy and honoured to be staging the final motor racing event that will be held at the historic Vernamfield facility. Fifty-nine years of racing will come to a close with our event — a truly historic occasion,” Stephen Gunter, NDRC executive member, told the J amaica Observer’s weekly Auto magazine.

Last year, the NDRC revealed that drag racing would no longer be held at Vernamfield as it was to be developed by the Government of Jamaica.

Gunter said Sunday’s event was facilitated by a special arrangement with the Ministry of Transport and Mining, the Airports Authority of Jamaica, and the NDRC. In recognition of the magnitude of the occasion, the NDRC will be offering the highest amount of prize money per single event — a total of $495,000 across its 10 competitive classes.

“It’s the highest amount for winners only. As a one-off event, it’s a winner-take-all format for the prize money. Trophies will be awarded to the winner and runner-up in each class, as well as special awards from our various sponsors,” Gunter explained.

The NDRC expects as bumper turnout from competitors and spectators as they attempt to leave Vernamfield in style.

“We expect the usual close, exciting racing that NDRC drag-racing events are renowned for. Many racers have indicated they are making special effort to attend because of the historic nature of the event.”
