XLCR, KC, STGC score big wins in Manning Cup opener
Many times champion Kingston College (KC) opened their season with an 8-0 trouncing of Dunoon Technical High School in their Group B ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup game at the Stadium East yesterday.
KC, the defending Super Cup champions, jumped to the top of Group B on goal difference ahead of Mona High, who clipped Calabar High 1-0. The game between Ardenne High and Clan Carthy High was not played because of identification issues.
After Trayvon Reid missed a sitter in the sixth minute, KC struggled to break down Dunoon Technical before Ronaldo Robinson opened the floodgate in the 29th minute.
The impressive Oneeko Allen (33rd, 87th) and Trayvon Reid (42nd, 58th) scored two goals each, while Trevon Tingling netted in the 38th minute. An own goal in the 48th minute was credited to 13-year-old goalkeeper Damero Burke after a Tingling header hit the upright and deflected off his foot into the goal. Midfielder Renato Campbell was also on the score sheet in minute 56.
Winning coach Ludlow Bernard said it was a fair performance from KC despite their slow start.
“I know despite the quality of the team, nervousness had a role to play in our very slow start. We took our time to get our game together, but once it flowed then we were able to capitalise on the opportunities that we created.
“Being the first game of the season we are pretty satisfied with the performance level. Clearly there is room for a lot more improvement and we will be looking forward to going back to the practice session to improve the many areas we think we have some concerns,” he noted.
Dunoon Technical, who are making a return to the Manning Cup, hardly had a look in, and never registered a shot on goal, but coach Gregory Hall was not disheartened and promised better things to come.
“It’s a pretty decent team but experience beat us. But to be honest they played to instructions and I knew it would end like this because the fitness is not there and it was just a matter of time before they started running over us,” said Hall.
Meanwhile, former champions St George’s College (STGC) thrashed Cedar Grove High 8-1 in Group A, while St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) blanked Papine High 3-0.
Excelsior High (XLCR) registered the biggest victory on the day, whipping Oberlin High 10-0 in Group E, while the St Catherine High versus St Mary’s College match was not played. St Jago and Denham Town drew 1-1 in Group D.
