It was cool to pop style
“Come out and pop style” was the criteria to win $100,000 at the first Campari Pop Style party held last Saturday night. Fancily dressed patrons rolled out in bright colours, unique fits, and their individual style at 876 Terrace Bar and Grill in Kingston, but it was Juven Dunn and Steven Morgan who were deemed most stylish by judges and attendees.
Dunn and Morgan were among eight contestants scouted at the event by the judges, dancer Desha Ravers, 2017 Campari Pop Style male winner Tony Krash, and influencer Shanice “Shanzi” Allen. They were ultimately chosen by the crowd through thunderous cheer.
Dunn, 27, was an eye-catcher in blue bob wig, black leather leggings, an extravagant yellow top paired with Gatsby flapper gloves, and disco boots. She was inspired by the movie Dancehall Queen.
“That’s my favourite movie and this was a great opportunity for me to showcase my personality, especially through that,” Dunn told the Jamaica Observer. “I think Jamaica really sets the trend worldwide in terms of fashion and I think it’s a great opportunity for me to broadcast my skills in regards to styling as well as broadcasting Jamaica’s uniqueness in terms of fashion.”
Dunn placed fourth in the Miss Universe Jamaica contest this year and was informed about the Pop Style contest through a pageant contestant. Though she currently works as a speech therapist and artist, Dunn hopes to develop a career as a fashion stylist.
“I want to invest the cash prize; it’s a great opportunity for me to get into styling so if there are any artistes out there who are interested you can contact me on Instagram. I style males too.”
One male who needed no help with styling was Steven Morgan. The 25-year-old rocked a copper turban with lavender pants and a complementary shirt with bright orange jacket. Morgan was a clear crowd favourite as he also showed his dancing skills while modelling his fit.
“When I was on stage I felt the energy that, ‘yeah I could win’, and my energy is always right,” he told the Jamaica Observer. “I have a beard and I thought it would look good with the hat, so I just put it on with the outfit. And it’s edgy, it’s popping style and I have to be popping.”
Morgan is a professional mixologist and operates his own T-shirt line called Hombre Eccentric. He learnt about the competition through social media.
“I’m a fashion person and I feel like the world needs to know about me — that alone encouraged me to enter,” he said. “I definitely want to invest the money in my business so more people can know about it and me.”
Marketing manager at J Wray and Nephew, Nadia Kiffin-Green was pleased with the evening.
“It was fantastic. Everybody came out, the venue was packed, the women were stylish, and you saw all sorts of different styles,” she said. “I am so happy consumers came out in all their styles to win that $100,000, and we look forward to another successful staging.”
The next party takes place on October 27 in Junction, St Elizabeth. The grand finale unfolds on December 1, where eight finalists will vie for the $250,000 grand prize.
