Westmoreland gets Digicel LTE service
BLUEFIELDS, Westmoreland
Digicel customers in Westmoreland are now experiencing faster mobile data speeds following the official launch of its LTE service in the parish recently.
LTE or Long-Term Evolution is technology that delivers high-speed data to smartphones and mobile devices in order to meet growing demands for data services.
Serving the capital, Savanna-la-Mar, major towns including Bluefields, Negril and other fast-growing areas in Westmoreland, Digicel LTE – with improved capacity — is delivering speeds up to 10 times faster than 4G technology. This means customers can do more with their mobile phones, such as make video calls and connect to streaming services like PlayGo and d’Music, while being able to upload and download photos and videos in seconds.
After flipping the switch to commission a new Digicel LTE site in Bluefields, Mayor of Savanna-la- Mar, Bertel Moore welcomed the Long-Term Evolution.
“True to its promise, Digicel has delivered LTE to the people of Westmoreland. Our dream is that the residents will use the technology to connect with the world in real time, for business, agriculture, e-commerce, education, government services, health care and more from the comfort of their homes, at schools or places of work. This is part of the vision of the municipal corporation to support new technology that improves the welfare of the residents of Westmoreland,” said Mayor Moore, who is also the chairman of the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation.
In thanking Mayor Moore for his support, Ricky Purkiss, corporate sales manager, Digicel–West, said the initiative forms part of the company’s vision.
“One of our main goals is to ensure that we provide our customers with the best high-speed mobile internet wherever they are. And switching on LTE in Westmoreland is a very important part of our journey towards 100 per cent internet penetration right across Jamaica.”
Feedback from early users of the Digicel LTE service in the parish has been overwhelmingly positive, with many reporting more consistent performance during peak hours with average speeds in excess of 40 megabits per second.
After successfully completing the first phase of LTE installations in Westmoreland, Digicel’s engineers are now switching on LTE sites in the neighbouring parishes of St Elizabeth, Clarendon, St James and Manchester.
“We’ve set our sights firmly on bridging the ‘digital divide’ and catapulting Jamaica to the forefront of the knowledge economy. That’s why we are spearheading this drive to ensure that Jamaica achieves 10 per cent broadband internet penetration within the shortest time possible,” said Purkiss.
