Herbert Morrison stay perfect out west
BOGUE, St James — Double defending champions Herbert Morrison extended their perfect run in ISSA Western Conference boys’ basketball, and in the process ended Cornwall College’s perfect start by winning both games at Herbert Morrison Technical on Thursday.
Herbert Morrison won the Under-16 game 55-31 and the Under-19 71-59, rallying from behind in both games as they ran their records to four straight wins in either section.
At Muschett High the home team lost both games to York Castle as the St Ann team won 74-26 in the juniors and 40-36 in the seniors.
Cornwall College still lead the points table in either section — topping the Under-16 with 11 points from six games, three more than Herbert Morrison and York Castle who are on eight points each, with the four schools all on four points.
In the Under-19 section Cornwall College are on nine points from five games, one more than Herbert Morrison, with York Castle in third place on six points, while Rhodes Hall High, Holland High and Muschett are tied on four points each.
At Herbert Morrison the home team got off to a slow start in the Under-16 category as Cornwall College led 10-6, but the champions eventually settled and outscored the visitors 49-21 over the next three quarters.
Anthony Thorpe led Herbert Morrison with 23 points, 12 steals and six rebounds; Taj Hewitt scored 15 points and had eight rebounds and eight steals; and Dennis Dawes had 13 rebounds.
Fitzroy Cameron scored seven points for Cornwall College and Romario Senior scored six points and had eight rebounds.
Cornwall College also got off to a good start in the Under-19 game and led 21-16 after the first quarter, but Herbert Morrison, led by David Gordon’s 27 points and 19 rebounds, took over the lead in the second quarter and led 33-28 at half-time. They increased the lead to seven points (49-42) at the end of the third quarter.
Kevin Smith also scored 17 points for Herbert Morrison and Davaughn Campbell got 16 points.
Two players got double-doubles for Cornwall College — Omar Campbell scored 21 points and had 16 rebounds, and Kenrick Brown scored 19 points and had 10 steals, while Alexander Barker had nine points and 10 rebounds.
In Wakefield, Lennon Richards scored 43 points and had 12 rebounds to lead York Castle to a big 48-point win over Muschett, who scored in single digits in all four quarters.
Joash Brown also scored 16 points for York Castle and Maurice Vassell scored 10 points while Lesroy Duncan led Muschett with 11 points.
Neil Henry had a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds for York Castle in their close four-point win in the Under-19 game, as Ihejah Clarke also scored 10 points for the winners while Akeem Baker scored 12 points for Muschett High.
