Young golfers shine in Alliance Buccaneer golf tournament
Several young golfers outshone their more established seniors to take various categories in the 23rd Alliance Buccanneer Memorial Golf Tournament, which concluded its two-day tournament at the Caymanas Golf Club in St Catherine on the weekend.
Justin Burrowes, who is still a junior having competed in and winning the Under-18 category of the Caribbean Junior Amateur Golf Championship earlier this year in Jamaica, had an outstanding championship to be declared the overall winner. Burrowes shot an even par 72 on the first day and came back on the second day to shoot two under par 70 for an overall score of 142. Burrowes was one of only three golfers to post under par scores.
The other two under par scorers were William Knibbs, who shot three under par on the second day, and beaten champion Dr Mark Newnham, who shot one under par on the final day of the tournament.
Burrowes is the youngest winner of the tournament to date.
William Knibbs, who posted scores of five over par 77 and three under par 69 for overall total score of 146 or four shots behind winner Justin Burrowes, enjoyed his best placement in the tournament. Knibbs is also a junior.
Sean Green took the third spot after scoring 74 and 76 on day one and two, respectively. He ended the tournament on 150 for the two days.
The 2017 winner Dr Mark Newnham had to settle for fourth spot. He shot 80 and 71 over the two days. He was just one shot behind Sean Green.
Former president of the Jamaica Golf Association Wayne Chai Chung bagged the fifth spot with scores of 80 and 76 or five shots behind Newnham.
The Men & Men Senior (7-12 handicap) was topped by another junior, Michal Lowe. He posted scores of 84 and 79. Second place went to another junior Tristan Brown (84, 80) who ended the tournament just one stroke behind Lowe. Justin Murray took the third spot (88, 81) after ending five strokes behind Brown.
Men Super Senior was topped by Bert Tomlinson (80, 79) who had to engage in a shoot-off with George Hugh (79, 80) to determine the category winner. Troy Allison (79, 82) was third, two strokes behind.
The Ladies section went to Emily Mayne (82, 78) who shot 160 over the two days. She is another junior who competed in this year’s Caribbean Junior Amateur Championship.
Matthew Grant, who was the overall junior winner, will take his first hold of the Vitorria Marley Trophy today at the awards function. He won the boys’ juniors 14-15 category after posting scores of 75 and 82. Matthew Hui (103, 103) took the runner-up spot.
The boys’ 11-13 category went to Aman Dhiman (80, 79) ahead of Brady Holmes (94, 95) and Trey Williams (96, 94)
The final junior category, the girls’ 11-13 was won by Mattea Issa (100, 91) with Winnie Lau (102, 99) taking second spot.
The tournament featured two different competitions running concurrently. One was a two-day, 36-hole Jamaica Golf Association qualifier and the other was played on Sunday as a Stableford competition.
This year’s competition was played in the memory of seven of Jamaica’s outstanding past national representatives — Milton “Buddy” Josephs, Izette Rhone, Lenan “Lennie” Chin, John Fulford, Al Chong, Claude Stewart and Mark Chin, former captain of the Buccaneers.
The title sponsor was Alliance Investment Management while the associate sponsors included AMG Packaging & Paper Company, Island Concrete and Chad-ad Distributors.
The awards function is scheduled for today at Caymanas Spring Golf Club in St Catherine starting at 1:00 pm.
