Leaders Portmore want it all from visiting Reno
Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) football leaders Portmore United will look to extend their stay atop the standings when they take on FC Reno in a 3:00 pm clash at Spanish Town Prison Oval.
Portmore, the title holders, are out in front with 21 points from 11 games as the league enters the second round of the preliminary stage. Former champions Reno are down in ninth on 11 points.
Portmore are in decent form, getting maximum six points from their last two games, including a tense 3-2 victory over fellow St Catherine-based team Dunbeholden FC last time out.
Conversely, Reno have failed to win in their last three games. Their most recent outing ended in a 0-1 defeat to Humble Lion FC.
Given recent history and the weight of momentum on their side, Portmore are favourites to take all three points.
At Mona Bowl in St Andrew, Waterhouse FC Head Coach Marcel Gayle returns to face his former team The University of the West Indies (UWI) FC — now guided by one-time assistant Andrew Peart — in a 3 o’ clock encounter.
UWI, who have lost two straight, are fourth with 17 points, while Waterhouse are two points behind in eighth.
In another 3:00 pm start, newly promoted Dunbeholden welcome Humble Lion to Royal Lakes playing field in St Catherine. Dunbeholden are last in the 12-team standing on seven points, while Humble Lion (16 points) are seventh.
At 7:00 pm, fifth-placed Tivoli Gardens FC (17 points) and 11th-placed Harbour View FC (10 points) lock horns at Edward Seaga Sports Complex in a contest between former national club champions.
The evening’s other 7 o’ clock encounter also features two former winners. It comes in the form of Arnett Gardens FC hosting Montego Bay United at Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex in St Andrew.
Arnett Gardens are third with 18 points, while Montego Bay United are 10th — a whisker beyond the two relegations places — with 11 points.
In tomorrow’s flagship Monday Night fixture, Mount Pleasant FA entertain Cavalier FC at Drax Hall Sports Complex in St Ann.
Mount Pleasant, the other team just promoted to the country’s top-tier club competition, are rolling smoothly so far and occupy second spot with 20 points. Youthful Cavalier, though in sixth place, have 16 points and are within striking distance of the top teams.
