Labour ministry to dispatch 206 farmworkers to Canada
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Labour and Social Security says 206 farmworkers will soon leave the island to take up employment opportunities in Canada under the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme (SAWP).
According to the ministry, Portfolio Minister Shahine Robinson, Permanent Secretary, Colette Robert-Risden and a delegation from the High Commission will dispatch the group tomorrow morning at a ceremony, which will be held at the ministry’s Overseas Employment Services Centre in downtown Kingston.
The SAWP, which is part of the ministry’s Overseas Employment Programme, involves contractual agricultural workers who are recruited to meet the short-term demand of manual labour during planting and harvesting seasons, providing opportunities for hundreds of Jamaicans on Canadian and American farms yearly.
This will be the first official send-off for this year.
