12 killed in road crashes since start of year
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Road Safety Unit (RSU) in the Ministry of Transport and Mining has revealed that 12 people have died on the nation’s roads since the start of the year.
Pedestrians, motorcyclists, and passengers and drivers of private motor vehicles have recorded the highest fatalities to date, the RSU said.
A breakdown of the fatalities reveal that, one was pedestrian, one was a pedal cyclist, five were motorcyclists, one pillion, two were private motor vehicle passengers, and two were drivers of private motor vehicles.
In the meantime the RSU is urging motorists to apply safe driving methods such as keeping left while driving; not overtaking around corners, and driving within the posted speed limits.
Additionally, the unit is reiterating the call for motorists to wear their seatbelts, (both drivers and passengers); helmets for motorcyclists and pillion passengers, and pedestrians to use the road with caution.
