J’can admits to buying driver’s permit in T&T, jailed for one year
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A Jamaican was on Wednesday sentenced to one year at hard labour in a Trinidad and Tobago prison for having a forged driver’s permit.
According to Trinidad and Tobago media reports, Oshaine George, 25, told the court that he gave someone at the licensing office TT$1,500 and a picture of himself then collected his driver’s permit three days later.
He reportedly had the permit for more than one year. The court was also told that the Immigration Department had an order of detention against him.
The fake driver’s permit was discovered after the Nissan AD wagon in which George was travelling crashed along the Solomon Hochoy Highway in the twin-island republic on Tuesday.
The vehicle was being driven by another Jamaican, 22-year-old Omari Lindsay, who reportedly attempted to make a turn and ran off the roadway.
It is further reported that Lindsay was unable to provide his driver’s permit and the vehicles insurance certificate to the police when asked.
He was later fined TT$400 for not having a permit and TT$2,000 for driving an uninsured vehicle.
