Champs Portmore host ‘exciting’ Cavalier in top clash

Champs Portmore host ‘exciting’ Cavalier in top clash

Champions Portmore United host the exciting Cavalier SC at Spanish Town Prison Oval at 3:00 pm in what could be a precursor to the Red Stripe Premier League final in many persons’ eyes.

In other games at 3:00 pm, Dunbeholden take on Mount Pleasant at Drax Hall, Montego Bay United tackle Harbour View at Wespow Park, and the University of the West Indies (UWI) host FC Reno at Mona Bowl.

At 7:00 pm, Tivoli Gardens host Arnett Gardens and the Monday night showdown pits Waterhouse FC against Humble Lion FC.

Portmore United lead the RSPL with 47 points while Cavalier are just two points behind in third spot on 45 points, and looking to leapfrog them into top spot.

Both teams have met twice this season and have shared wins with Portmore winning the first encounter 2-0 on October 7, while Cavalier returned the favour 2-1 on December 23. This will be the third meeting between the two and both are seeking the psychological advantage, having already basically secured their top six play-off positions.

While Portmore United welcome back the services of the talented Andre Lewis, Cavalier will be without two of their most talented players in Jamoi Topey and Nicque Daley, currently playing for overseas clubs.

The 24-year-old Lewis, formerly of St George’s College, played in the USA for Vancouver Whitecaps, Charleston Battery and Portland Timber. Lewis, along with Ricardo Morris, Javon East, Rondee Smith, Venton Evans, Osani Ricketts, Roshane Sharpe, Donnegy Fer, Cleon Pryce, Chevany Willis and Rosario Harriott, will be hard to deny.

Topey, a towering National Under-20 defender, has joined United Soccer League team Bethlehem Steel on loan for the rest of the season, while Daley, a National Under-20 striker, secured a six-week trial stint at Colo-Colo in Chile.

But Cavalier have enough talented players to hold their own in Alex Marshall, Chevonne Marsh, Nicholas Hamilton, Kaheem Parris, brothers Jermy and Nicholas Nelson, along with Leonard Rankine.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, struggling Montego Bay United, who are rooted at the bottom of the league with 19 points, will be hoping to halt their losing streak when they tackle a Harbour View team sitting in ninth on 25 points.

The former champions, Montego Bay have lost four consecutive games, nine of their last 11 matches, and 14 of their 25 games, and are in dire straits and must start a winning run to avoid the dreaded relegation.

Harbour View are not doing much better as, after getting a lift following the resignation of then head coach Ricardo Gardner, the “Stars of the East” are back in familiar waters, losing three of their last five games to be sitting just three points above the relegation zone.

It should be an interesting encounter between two former champions fighting to avoid relegation.

Drax Hall in St Ann will provide the clash between the two promoted teams in Mount Pleasant and Dunbeholden separated by 14 points. While Mount Pleasant are fourth on 38 points looking to secure a play-off spot, Dunbeholden are 10th with 24 points and fighting for dear life to stay out of the relegation zone.

Having won just once in their last 10 games, Reno have stumbled into the relegation zone in 11th spot on 22 points ,and they face a UWI team in sixth spot on 37 points who are looking to consolidate their play-off position. UWI have won three of their last four games and, playing at home, they will be hard to beat.

In the late kick-off at 7:00 pm at Edward Seaga Sports Complex, Tivoli Gardens and Arnett Gardens clash in what is expected to be another exciting encounter. Only two points separate the teams, with Arnett Gardens in fifth spot on 37 points and Tivoli Gardens in seventh on 35 points.
