KINGSTON and St Andrew Football Association Super League (KSAFA) team Molynes United’s have turned down an offer from Brazilian outfit Club Atletico Tubarao for 19-year-old Tyrick Sutherland following a recent one-month trial.

Sutherland, former Manning Cup midfielder for Excelsior High School, impressed during his stay at the lower division team, but the club’s agent/scout Jason Grant, in consultation with management, thought the offer was insufficient.

“They were very impressed but the deal that they wanted wouldn’t benefit us and we know the talent of the player. The player understands our decision,” said Grant.

Despite the language barrier, Grant said they loved him and even nicknamed him “Pogba” in reference to the French World Cup winner.

“But Club Atletico Tubarao is a selling club and they wanted us to give them him free then in the long run it would work out for us,” Grant added.

Grant, who operates the Soccer Players Management Programme (SPMP) Academy, noted that Molynes United have adopted a similar approach to that of KSAFA Premier League clubs Cavalier and Harbour View in investing heavily in youth.

In 2018 Molynes United started a partnership with Jason Grant and Garnet Lawrence of SPMP Academy from Portmore, whose mandate is to develop and establish a viable programme for the young players to bring them to a level where they are marketable globally.

So far, Molynes United have sent away two players — Kyle Ming, who went on trial to clubs in Amsterdam and is now at Cavalier, and Sutherland.

Sutherland was also on the scoresheet in Molynes United’s opening day 4-0 win over Constant Spring in the Super League.

“I have changed the whole mood at Molynes United with a whole lot of players under the age of 20 years-old. Now 99 per cent of the Molynes team is under-20. That’s where the focus will be,” Grant revealed.

“Tyrick is just one of the many talented players we have there now. The club’s focus is not about points but to get players abroad,” he reiterated.
