Girlz to shake it up against Chile
Jamaica’s World Cup-bound Reggae Girlz will enter their final practice match against Chile at Montego Bay Sports Complex today, hoping to build on their 1-0 victory in the first game in Kingston.
This evening’s kick-off is set at 7:00.
In the opening game of the two-match series against the 38th-ranked South Americans inside National Stadium on Thursday, the Girlz gave a pleasing performance, especially in the first half where they controlled the traffic and deservedly went ahead in the ninth minute.
Head Coach Hue Menzies, who is closely examining the performances as he homes in on his final squad of 23 for the Fifa Women’s World Cup in France, hopes to expose as many players and try out as many combinations as he can in today’s curtain call on the friendly series.
“You will see a bit more depth in the team of 24 players, as everybody will get a chance to play, so you will see a different dimension,” he told the Jamaica Observer on a visit to the newspaper’s Beechwood Avenue offices on Friday.
He revealed that England-born midfielder Laura Jackson, who debuted on Thursday, along with livewire Chinyelu Asher, will not be considered for today’s matchup.
“We will sit out Laura Jackson and Chinyelu Asher, so we will introduce a few more players as we have to manage the players as they have to go back to their respective clubs,” said Menzies.
Coming out of Thursday’s match, where victory was secured with a corner kick goal from Hungary-based midfielder Marlo Sweatman, Menzies said he had concerns with the conditioning of some players, but vowed to work on those issues ahead of today’s showdown.
“In the second half, fatigue showed with players playing in Europe in their winter climate and college players not having their season, so our fitness was a little off. So going forward we have to do a better job of controlling that environment, but we will take care of that.
“The good thing is that we will have another opportunity on Sunday (today) to play against them, and I know that they will be coming hard and they are a good opponent,” said the USA-based coach.
Whatever the game plan and combination of players decided on, barring any unforeseen occurrence team star Khadija Shaw is expected to be at the centre.
Shaw, while unable to score on the outstanding Chilean goalkeeper Christiane Endler of Paris Saint-Germain, was threatening and remained inspirational in Thursday’s affair.
Fans would be greatly entertained should they see Nicole McClure, Sydney Schneider, Konya Plummer, Allyson Swaby, Dominique Bond-Flasza, Marlo Sweatman, Cheyna Matthews, Deneisha Backwood, Jody Brown and others take the field.
Chile’s hopes of overturning the result and performance against the hosts will rest with captain Christiane Endler, Yanara Aedo, Francisca Lara, Daniela Pardo, and Yessentia Lopez.
Looking back at that encounter, Menzies weighed the positives against the negatives and how a final deduction could aid today’s execution.
“In the first half we came out with the hype, with the Jamaican people being behind us… we felt like we were more in charge of the game in the first half. We got the early goal and we kept our form, then they came at us and we held them, then we got back at them; and I thought we should have had a couple more chances to finish,” he said.
Menzies, the principal of Florida Kraze Krush football club, was happy with his debutantes, though he has decided to rest Jackson who came into camp with a slight niggle.
“Cheyna Matthews is six months off her pregnancy and she is still trying to find her way back, but she showed some dash…Lauren Jackson gave us a bit of and Kayla McKoy came in and she gave some brilliance, and there were some young players we brought in. So from the standpoint of our new players, everybody is fitting in,” Menzies reasoned.
Jamaica will contest Group C of the World Cup against Brazil, Italy and Australia, while Chile compete in Group F against Sweden, USA and Thailand.
Another feature of today’s football activities in the second city will be the arrival and parading of the Fifa Women’s World Cup trophy, as it makes its frirst stop in Jamaica on its global sojourn.
