Blackwood, Brown play starring roles in Girlz win
CATHERINE HALL, St James — The combination between a player filling in at left back and a late second half substitute led to Jamaica’s third goal in their 3-2 win over Chile in their women’s international friendly at Montego Bay Sports Complex on Sunday.
Deneisha Blackwood, who has earned her place on the Fifa World Cup bound Reggae Girlz squad as a left-sided attacking player despite being employed as a defensive player, overlapped down the flank and dismissed two Chileans before finding Jody Brown for an easy tap in to win the game for local team in front of a good turnout.
Blackwood, who had filled in as a left wing back against the USA in the Concacaf semi-finals against world number one USA in Houston last year, was starting her second game in that position in what Head Coach Hue Menzies said was a “rotation of players and using them in different positions”, at Sunday’s post-match press conference.
Menzies described Blackwood as the outstanding player of the game for the local girls. “I thought “Den Den” was the man [player] of the match; they have a potent offensive group and they came at her every time but she held her ground and played an excellent game for us.”
Blackwood, who picked up the ball just in the Chilean half and dribbled into the area, beating several defenders before crossing to the penalty area and just missing Kedeisha Shaw but falling nicely for the unmarked Brown to tap it past goalkeeper Natalia Campos.
“I have always wanted to play left back,” Blackwood said, “but coach thought I was an attacking player and against the USA they saw that, that was where I needed to play and told myself that I was more comfortable there.
“I just wanted to help my teammates and I crossed to Jody and we got the goal,” said Blackwood, who had played the position in their first game against the Chileans at the National Stadium on Thursday.
Blackwood, who was more involved in the game on Sunday than the first game four days prior, said she reacted to the tempo of the second game. “I think it’s the pace of the game that motivates me to work hard for myself and the team and I get the adrenaline to work harder.”
Teenager Brown, who entered the game with the scores locked at 2-2, said the crowd lifted her and when she went on to the field she was keen to get a goal.
“It was a good feeling and the crowd came out to support us and we were thankful for that, so when I went on I told myself that I had to score as the crowd was here for us and I got the goal,” the St Ann native said.
