THE country’s woes continued at the fifth staging of the Jamaica International Badminton Championships, taking place inside National Indoor Sports Centre.

After a challenging morning session on day one, things never got any better in the evening sessions as the two players who had advanced to the quarter-finals were booted from the tournament.

Taina Daley was unable to complete the first set of her match, as she had to retire due to injury while trailing Maria Ulitina of the Ukraine 4-16. Shane Wilson found the going tough against another Ukrainian as he lost 10-21, 12-21 to Artem Pochtarov.

The mixed doubles action also got under way in the evening session of day two with all five Jamaican pairs ending up on the losing side. A Bianchini and G Ghaniyu (of Canada and India) defeated Garron Palmer and Christine Leyow in three sets, 21-13, 15-21, 21-14.

Francielton Farias and Luana Vicente of Brazil advanced on a walkover of Ashane Newland and Taina Daley. The Barbadian pair of Dalkeith Jonathan Thorpe and Monyata Riviera ousted Craig Allison and Mikaylia Haldane 21-19, 21-17.

The Peruvian pair of Diego Mini and Danica Nishimura continued to heap the pressure on Jamaica despite being taken to three sets by Shane Wilson and Tahlia Richardson, as the match ended 22-20, 19-21, 21-18.

Artur Pomoceno and Lohaynny of Brazil stopped Antony McNee and Alana Bailey also in three sets, as they rallied from a set down to win 17-21, 21-16, 21-6.

There was a rout for the Congo pair of Mbongo Dmitri and Aisse Soukouma with Dennis Coke and Katherine Wynter, as Wynter had earlier retired after injuring her knee during her singles match earlier in the day.

In yesterday’s morning session the Jamaican pair of Che Beckford and Matthew Yee-Grant received a walkover from their countrymen Craig Allison and Dwayne Watson as the men’s doubles took centre stage.

The pair of Garron Palmer and Kemar Valentine were not so lucky, as they were bounced out the tournament by Jose Guevara and Daniel Regal of Peru 12-21, 11-21.

Ruben Castellanos and Anibal Marroquin of Guyana defeated Matthew Lee and Shane Wilson in three sets, 22-24, 21-15, 21-15, before Gareth Henry and Samuel Ricketts defeated countrymen Allantae Daley and Shamar Hunter 21-9, 21-12.

Fabricio Farias and Francielton Farias of Brazil had a straight sets win of 21-4, 21-15 over Bradley Graham and Albert Myles.

In the women’s doubles, the first Jamaican pair of Alana Bailey and Mikaylia Haldane came from a set down to defeat the Barabadian pair of Monyata Riviera and Sabrina Scott in three sets, 14-21, 21-16, 21-19, while the other Jamaican women’s pair had to forfeit due to injuries to Wynter and Dailey.
