Portland’s prize fight
Candidates in the April 4 by-election to fill the vacancy in Portland Eastern have spoken frankly about their plans for the constituency following elaborate Nomination Day activities last Friday.
The Portland parish capital of Port Antonio was shifted into carnival move as Damion Crawford and Ann-Marie Vaz tried to woo last-minute voters.
Crawford, a lecturer now on indefinite leave from The University of the West Indies, who also resigned as a senator last week, will represent the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) in a seat that the PNP has ruled for the past 30 years; while Vaz, wife of Cabinet Minister Daryl, is running in the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) colours.
Both have outlined some of the things that they would like to get done were they to win the hotly contested by-election, in interviews on pages 4 and 5.
