#Champs2019: Holmwood’s Mitchell, Bellefield’s Martin win Class 3 1,500m gold
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jodyann Mitchell of Holmwood Technical and Tavaughn Martin of Bellefield finished tops in the boys’ and girls’ Class Three 1,500m finals at the 109th ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’Athletic Championships underway at the National Stadium.
Mitchell upset her more fancied rival Kishay Rowe of Spaldings with the win in 4:42.68. Rowe was second in 4:45.59, with Shone Walters (4:45.61) of St Mary High in third.
On the boys’ side, Martin ran true to his superb form with an almost post-to-post effort to win in a record 4:12.56.
Martin the Central Champion and record holder lowered Jauavney James’s old mark of 4:14.51 set in 2013.
This was the seventh record of this championship.
KC’s Jaquan Coke (4:13.88) and Nathaniel McLeod (4:21.83) took the silver and bronze respectively.
