Portland Eastern election history

Portland Eastern election history

THE constituency of Portland Eastern extends from a point where the Guava River crosses the St Thomas/Portland parish boundary at Macuna Hill, easterly along the St Thomas/Portland parish boundary to the sea coast to the mouth of the Rio Grande at St Margaret’s Bay and along the Rio Grande to where it meets the Guava River. It then goes along the Guava River back to the starting point at the Portland/St Thomas boundary.

Portland Eastern featured in all of the 16 contested parliamentary General Elections: the PNP won 11 times to the JLP’s three, and independent candidates twice.

The PNP’s victories were in 1959, 1967, 1972, 1976, 1989, 1993, 1997, 2002, 2007, 2011, 2016.

The JLP won in 1955, 1962 and 1980.

The 1983 General Election was not contested by the PNP and Gerald A Tucker (JLP) was elected unopposed.
