BARBADIAN-born Canadian-based jockey Simon Husbands, who departed the island yesterday to resume riding in Canada, made it clear that he will be back at Caymanas Park to partner the Anthony Nunes trained, I Am Di One during the Classic series of races this season.

This came after Husbands piloted the bay filly to an enterprising 3 ¾ lengths win in the 45th running of the Supreme Ventures Limited sponsored 1000 Guineas over one mile (1,600m) on Saturday, April 13.

“I know that this filly is an exceptional one. The first time I worked her, I told Anthony Nunes that I love this filly and that I would love to ride her in the Classics this year. He told me ‘Simon, I am way behind’ and I said, I don’t care, I will ride her and I know she will get the job done,” Husbands said.

“He (Nunes) did a fantastic job with getting her ready so quick for this race and it did work as I Am Di One came home for a truly great win.

“I think she is the best filly in Jamaica right now as a three-year-old,” he informed, while being very expressive with his hands moving about to underscore his position.

Husbands, who has ridden 212 winners locally, said that he would more than likely be back here for the remaining Classic races.

“I leave Monday (spoke on Saturday) but most likely, I will be back to ride her ( I Am Di One) in the remaining of the Classic races. She was galloping nicely all the way in the Guineas and when Lady Blue came up next to me and I asked her to quicken a little bit and she gave me that and I knew it was all over and done with. We went in front this time and it did not matter.

“There is no doubt that I Am Di One will get two-turns easily and she will be a factor in the Classic races to come,” Husbands said with passion written on his face.
