WASHINGTON, USA (CMC) — The World Bank’s vice-president for Latin America and the Caribbean, Axel van Trotsenburg will start a two-day visit to Jamaica tomorrow.

He will hold talks with Prime Minister Andrew Holness, as well as key representatives from the private sector, civil society and the youth, on the bank’s support to the country’s efforts to improve economic and climate resilience, as well as strengthen human capital and provide opportunities for young people.

A World Bank statement said that the economist will be accompanied by Tahseen Sayed, the bank’s country director for the Caribbean, and Galina Sotirova, country manager for Jamaica.

It said that he will also visit the animation lab at the University of Technology Jamaica (UTech) which is being supported by the World bank under the Youth Employment in the Digital & Animation Industries (YEDAI) project, and will have discussions with young entrepreneurs including at-risk youth benefiting from the bank-funded Housing, Opportunity Production & Employment (HOPE) Programme.

The new vice-president has over 30 years of experience at the World Bank Group and manages the bank’s aswell as relations with 31 countries and a portfolio of ongoing projects, technical assistance, and grants of about US$30 billion.

“During his first visit to Jamaica he will affirm the World Bank’s commitment to continued support of the Government’s efforts to promote sustainable growth for all Jamaicans. The World Bank Group has been a strong partner for Jamaica over the past 55 years, providing over US$3 billion in loan and grant financing over the years,” the statement added.
