Pollard, Lewis hardly needed as Mumbai secure play-off spot
MUMBAI, India (CMC) —Kieron Pollard struck the winning runs as Mumbai Indians beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in a super over to clinch a play-off spot in the Indian Premier League here Thursday.
Asked to chase just nine after scores were tied at 162 at the end of the regulation overs, Hardik Pandya blasted a six from the second ball of the Super Over bowled by leg-spinner Rashid Khan, before Pollard worked the fourth ball to midwicket for a couple to end the contest.
Pollard (10), along with fellow West Indies and Trinidad and Tobago teammate Evin Lewis (one) had earlier both failed when Mumbai, opting to bat first, were held to 162 for five off their 20 overs at Wankhede Stadium.
In form South African opener Quinton de Kock top-scored with 69 not out off 58 deliveries — his fourth half-century of the season — while captain Rohit Sharma got 24 and Suryakumar Yadav, 23.
Lewis, in only his third match of the season, faced six balls before holing out to deep midwicket in frustration off Afghan off-spinner Mohammad Nabi in the 13th over — one of three wickets to fall for 29 runs.
Pollard put on 32 for the fifth wicket with de Kock before perishing in the final over, skying left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed to square leg.
In reply, Sunrisers got an unbeaten 71 off 47 balls from Manish Pandey while Nabi got 31 and opener Wriddhiman Saha, 25, as they put Mumbai under pressure.
The visitors required 17 from the last over and six from the final ball, and Pandey launched medium pacer Pandya over the ropes at long-on to tie the game and force the super over.
