MONTEGO BAY, St James — Promoted teams Cambridge United and Violet Kickers will go into today’s return-leg of the St James Football Association/Sandals Resorts International Major League at the UDC field with everything to play for, after battling out a 1-1 stalemate in the first leg last week.

The winner of today’s game will advance to the final where they will play the winner of the other semi-final between Lilliput Rovers and Heights FC.

The teams battled to a hard fought 1-1 scoreline last week, with former champions Violet Kickers coming from a goal down at half-time to earn parity with favourites Cambridge United.

Cambridge United, who had the better record in the first round after topping their zone, took the lead in the 15th minute last Wednesday though Obrien Bent, who extended his league-leading goals tally to nine.

Dominic Brissett levelled for Violet Kickers in the 57th minute to set up today’s winner-take-all return-round game.

Last week Violet Kickers, who started the season slowly, proved their four-game winning streak coming into the semi-finals was no fluke, dominating the first phase of the second half against the best defensive team in the regular season.

Cambridge FC came into the game as favourites to win and advance to the final but found a tough and determined Violet Kickers team that put up a commendable showing.

Bent made the best of a good start to give Cambridge FC the lead after just 15 minutes, but despite the team creating a handful of chances they failed to capitalise.

Seven minutes into the second half Brissett made up for a miss a few minutes earlier as he controlled a cross from the left on his chest, put it on the ground between two defenders, and shot it past goalkeeper Chad Trough into the far corner.

Bent had two good chances late in the game to retake the lead, but on both occasions he hesitated and allowed the Violet Kickers defence to recover and block him at close range to the goal.
