SO My Toronto — Dwight Drummond

Dwight Drummond is an award-winning journalist and the host on CBC Toronto News at Six which airs weeknights on CBC television. He has been working in broadcast news for close to 30 years. With Drummond at the helm, CBC Toronto News is once again nominated for Best Local Newscast at this year’s Canadian Screen Awards (CSA). Drummond is also nominated for Best Local Anchor and for Best Live News Special for hosting CBC News : Ontario Votes . In 2015, Drummond and the CBC Toronto team were recognised as Canada’s Best Local Newscast.

Home is … Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Favourite hotel… Sandals MoBay. I was married there 20 years ago and recently returned to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary.

What’s your Toronto secret?

Hillcrest, a park in my neighbourhood. It’s on an escarpment overlooking the city and provides a beautiful view of Toronto. Not quite the kind of views Jamaicans get from Blue Mountains, but still nice!

Bus, taxi or tube?

Uber.

What’s your favourite food?

Ackee and salt fish with fried breadfruit or boiled dumplings. I can have that for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

What’s on rotation in your car stereo?

Really enjoying Koffee right now. Toast was a banger and she has followed up with Rapture to show she is not a one-hit wonder.

Were you trapped on a desert island with four TV anchors who would they be and why?

Ed Bradley because watching him on 60 minutes made me want to get into broadcast journalism. Howard Cosell, one of the best sportscasters ever. Another great: Lester Holt because I hear he shares my Jamaican heritage. Edward R Murrow because he helped create modern broadcasting.

If you could buy any building in Toronto and live there, which would it be?

Drake’s new Bridal Path Mansion. It looks like a residence and resort all in one.

What makes someone a Torontonian?

We are known for being kind and tolerant. Jamaica’s motto, Out of Many, One People works for Toronto, too, because we are such a multiracial, multicultural city and, for the most, we get along. Haters and bad-mind people, please don’t move here!

Live (broadcast) or delayed?

I host a live show daily so I would have to say live broadcast.

Who is your hero?

Marcus Garvey. His message of self-reliance always resonated with me, even as a young person.

Where do you go to unwind?

The Caribbean. My wife is from Grenada so we alternate islands from year to year.

Last play/musical/movie you saw?

The opera La Bohème.

Last book read?

Sapein by Yuval Noah Harari, a must-read for anyone who cares about how we are living on this planet. Just about to finish The Alice Network, a good spy novel by Kate Quinn. I tend to alternate between fiction and non-fiction.

What are you up to at the moment for work?

Gearing up to cover some Raptors play-offs basketball. We are also prepping for our federal election in the fall.

Most iconic Torontonian?

Drake. Only Toronto could produce a black Jewish kid who would rule the rap world! I also love the way he reps his hometown on the world stage.
